Considering...

A few months ago, I picked up this campaign dresser for $25 at our local Goodwill.  Not bad for a full-size dresser and considering that a refinished campaign dresser was recently listed on our local Craigslist for $300!

It's in need of some love, so I planned to give it a coat of paint and call it a day.  Similar to these...

But I've done painted furniture before (best instructions I've found for painting coming soon!)  And for some reason, I'm feeling a little over the painted campaign dresser.  So I'm considering going a different way...

Surprisingly, I'm leaning towards staining the dresser a dark shade.  I wonder how difficult it would be to sand down and restain the dresser myself... Has anyone tried this before?  Any tips to share?

  1. Wow Catherine! What a great way to relaease your inner creativity. I love how you take old stuff with countless stories imbedded in the material and restore those items so others can create new meaning and new stories for years to come.

  2. Catherine - I love all of your thrift store finds. I wish I had the urge to look for home decor as much as I do clothes! Then maybe my house would be decorated as pretty as yours is.

I know you said you didn't want to do a painted dresser, but I am a sucker for color - and that green is beautiful. I am totally digging the gold handles with the black tassels.

  3. I have never stained anything before, but my mother has. Make sure you do it outside on a drop cloth. It can be really messy. Other than that it could be a great look! I love dark wood. Happy staining

  4. What a beautiful piece of furniture! I love that you're thinking of dark wood. I have a few pieces that are dark walnut in my house that I picked up from antique stores, and I would never consider painting them. When used in moderation with my other furnishings they add depth and character to any room.

    Gorgeous!

  5. Your Campaign dresser from 2011,- how did you end up staining it dark, and how did it turn out? I just bought the same one but also got the 2 mirrors that go with it, plus a tall 24 in. matching Dixie Campaigner, both for $200. Yay me! I'm doing a bohemian bedroom...
